Ever since we moved last year I have been keeping busy with all sorts of home projects. My favorite thing to do is to make things for Ella and Fred. This is a pretty simple DIY (do it yourself) canopy. I had originally made it to fit her crib, but she just got a toddler bed from Ikea, so I had to make some adjustments to make it fit. Her new bed is much lower than her crib was and so the curtain shears didn't fit around the base of the bed. I ended up taking apart her striped crib skirt and sewing it to the bottom of the shears.
My original inspiration came from this photo I found on Ohdeeoh.
I basically followed two tutorials to make this- and total the whole cost was about $20. The first tutorial can be found here. I know this is for a chandeleir, but the concepts are very related. First off, I too used part of a hoop from an old lamp as the starting structure. I sewed 3 floor length sheer curtains together along their long sides, leaving the top part open so that they could be hung on the hoop. I then used this tutorial to make the tassles from embroidery floss. I used a very large needle to thread the end of the tassles along the edges of the canopy opening, approximating their intervals. I cut the lamp hoop with wire cutters and then threaded the hoop through the shears. Once they were on, I taped the hoop back together with masking tape. I used 5 ceiling hooks to then hang the canopy from the ceiling, just like the chandeleir tutorial shows. It's hard to give a time estimation for this, certainly an afternoon's work, but considering the cost of a store bought canopy or some other artwork to fill the wall, I think it was worth it. Ella also finds it to be very cozy!
